China is set to have an major impact on the world in the coming
years. Here are some statistics:
- The last census in 2000 estimated the population to be
1.24 billion. By comparison, the population of
North America in 2005 is 454 million, and the population
of the European Union 460 million.
- Nineteen of the world's 100 largest cities were located
in China.
- It is reputed that 17% of the world's cranes can be found
in just one Chinese city - Shanghai.
- In 2004, China's trade surplus with the United States was
$162 billion, with the European Union (existing
15 members) the surplus was $90 billion.
From the above statistics it should be clear that China
is currently the principal driving force behind the world's
economy. This feature is likely to become more and more marked
in the coming years. The country will occupy an increasingly
central position on the world stage, and will play a larger
role in international affairs.
China is not all about commerce though. The country has a
5000 year history, and although the Han Chinese make up over
90% of the population, there are a wide variety of unique
cultures co-existing here. Naturally for such a large country,
the climate and terrain is also very diverse. Tourism in China
is still in the early stages of development, but there are
many spectacular sights and fascinating places to visit. The
political landscape is also very different from western models,
regularly baffling commentators. China is a land of mystery,
and from the outside the shroud is virtually impenetrable.
Still poor in economic terms, China is rich in many other
senses. Whether you are currently studying or pursuing business
opportunities, we suggest that you become more familiar with
a country that will change your world.
