Cities Covered by the ARAQ Network

The ARAQ network covers five cities in the northeastern provinces of Heilongjiang (Harbin, Jiamusi), Jilin (Changchun) and Liaoning (Shenyang, Dalian). Click on Heilongjiang, Jilin or Liaoning Province on the the map below for a brief introduction and a map of the province. The map requires Flash to be installed on your computer

We are often asked why the ARAQ network does not extend to Beijing or even Shanghai. There are two main reasons.

  • The ten universities currently covered by the ARAQ Network provide a comprehensive cross section of courses, from short-term Chinese language programmes to doctorate courses carried out entirely in English. Using the ARAQ database search facility, It is possible to choose from over 800 courses. Three of the universities are rated among the top twenty in China. We feel it is not necessary to extend the network any further.
  • Many of our programme participants study Chinese language. People from the major northeastern cities speak the most standard form of Putonghua Mandarin. In addition, the lack of internationalization in the northeastern region of China provides a perfect environment to improve your communication skills fast. While there are many Koreans and Russians studying in the northeast of China already, there are relatively few "westerners". You will be speaking Chinese all day, every day, even to your classmates!
  • In contrast, Beijing and Shanghai are already teeming with English speakers. Linguistically speaking, Beijingers are famous for their dirty "er" intonation, and Shanghaiese - well they speak a different language entirely! Factoring in the high cost of living and pollution issues in these two cities, we feel they are among the least appropriate places in China for students of Putonghua Mandarin to study.
