Jiamusi University is one of a new breed of
Chinese Universities. Twenty years ago the Chinese government
designated Jiamusi University as earmarked for expansion and
started investing considerable money. At that time Jiamusi
University consisted of just two teaching buildings. Today
it has a student body of above 25,000. The pace of development
at Jiamusi University has been phenomenal and is still continuing
- enormous new library and swimming pool complexes are scheduled
for completion during 2006.

Jiamusi University has developed
a particularly strong reputation in the field of medicine.
Boasting state of the art facilities, students come from
all over China to study. The university even has around
100 international students from India and Pakistan studying
medicine here (their courses are taught completely in
English). |
The university is keen to continue its programme
of internationalization, and has invested a considerable amount
in the facilities for foreign students. The international
students dormitory is a hotel in every sense of the word.
It includes restaurants, several bars, an internet cafe, a
sports gym, karaoke rooms and conference rooms. Rooms are
spacious and clean, and it is possible to rent computers with
24-hour internet access at just US$20 per month.
Currently the majority of the international
student population come from Korea, Russia, Japan, India,
Pakistan and Afghanistan. The university has an ambitious
target to expand its international student population from
the current 264 to over 600 in three years, and the management
are making every effort to meet this target.
