Furthermore, Chinese hospitals work differently to hospitals
in most other countries. Hospitals in China will require that
you pay first, then receive reimbursement from your insurance
company at a later date. Therefore we suggest taking the following
precautions:
Take out a policy in your own country. This policy should include
repatriation to your own country in the event of serious illness
or injury, as this can be extremely expensive. Remember that
while coverage for medical treatment in China does not need
to be so high, treatment in your own country after repatriation
may be expensive. Choose a suitable amount of coverage for medical
treatment based on actual costs in your home country.
In addition, take out a basic domestic insurance policy here
in China. In the event you are hospitalized, this insurance
will ensure that you receive prompt and effective treatment
here in China without international legal complications or
language barriers.
H.Y.C.C. offers enrolment in its domestic group accident
and illness insurance policy during your period of study.
We charge an enrolment fee of $50 and an administration fee
of $5 per month. Our policy uses China Life Insurance Company,
the largest life insurance company in China. The premium is
just $40 for four months (minimum period of enrolment), with
an additional $5 per subsequent month. Although the coverage
limits are better than ordinary Chinese insurance policies,
they are still low compared with companies in more developed
countries. Obviously there is no coverage for repatriation
or treatment in your home country. Please contact H.Y.C.C.
for a copy of the original Chinese policy contract and an

For participants
who choose to join this Chinese insurance policy, H.Y.C.C.
will handle communications with the insurance company
in the event of illness / injury of the participant
(assuming H.Y.C.C. is notified of the illness / injury).
If the patient is incapacitated, H.Y.C.C. will also
pay the hospital any medical costs they require prior
to treatment. However we will only do this if we are
confident
|
|
that the illness / injury is covered under the terms of the
policy (ie we are confident that we will be reimbursed by the
insurance company in the future). In all cases of serious illness
/ injury to programme participants, H.Y.C.C. will promptly contact
the emergency contact person nominated by the participant and
inform them of the situation.
Finally a reminder to all study abroad participants: Check
what your policy covers you for. Skiing accidents,
for instance, may not be covered. Do not engage in any activity
that is outside the scope of your insurance coverage.
Once again, we advise you to think carefully about insurance
before your arrival in China. If you fail to take out adequate
insurance coverage our ability to assist you will also be
curtailed.
