The ARAQ Network includes three universities in the
City of Dalian - Dalian
University of Technology, Liaoning
Normal University and Dalian
University of Foreign Languages.
The city of Dalian adds an extra dimension to the ARAQ
Network. Unlike the other four cities (Jiamusi, Harbin,
Changchun and Shenyang), Dalian is already a highly
internationalized city. Corporations from all over the
world come to Dalian to set up their Chinese operational
or manufacturing bases. You will hear a wide variety
of languages spoken on and around the streets of Dalian
¨C the sight of foreign businessmen or tourists no longer
attracts stares of curiousity from the natives.

Dalian is different
from the other four cities in the ARAQ Network
in other ways too. One major difference is its
location on the coast of China, across the Bohai
Gulf from Tianjin and Beijing, and it is the 6th
largest port in China. The coastal location tempers
its climate considerably. Summer brings refreshing
sea breezes, while winter is much milder than
inland Chinese cities. |
Dalianers have a way of life that is rather unique
in China, and in many ways Dalian is not a typical Chinese
city. Perhaps unsurprisingly then, the natives of Dalian
have a distinctive accent. They speak clear Putonghua
Chinese, but it has a noticeable Dalian burr. The accent
is pleasant on the ear, and foreigners learning Putonghua
Chinese in Dalian tend to retain their accent during
their subsequent careers in China.
Another thing you will notice about Dalian, especially
if you arrive via Beijing or another Chinese city, is
its cleanliness. Dalian is an organized, attractive
city enhanced by its gleaming skyscrapers and litter-free
streets. The same can be said of its universities. Campuses
are peaceful and understated, in contrast with the vibrant
atmosphere and eye-catching architecture favoured by
most Chinese universities. The comfortable living environment
is reflected in the cost of living ¨C more expensive
than the other cities in the ARAQ Network, but still
cheaper than Beijing and much cheaper than Shanghai.
In short, we consider Dalian to be the "shallow
end" of the foreign study swimming pool. You will
fall in love with this city, but please make sure its
charms do not distract you too much from your study!
